This helmet is a WWI (1914-1918) Austrian M-17 reissued in the 1930s to serve the early Third Reich. It is painted black, as most early SS helmets were, and was used in parade and ceremony functions. The exterior has a black semi-gloss finish over the original green paint. It contains two CA Porcher style decals: a first pattern SS runic shield on the right and a Nazi party shield on the left. The SS runes are placed further back on the helmet than the party shield. Since “transitional” reissued helmets did not receive factory decal applications, decals for these helmets were issued “at the unit level” and often applied irregularly by individual soldiers.
